Their is lots of official manual from electric car manufacture is available, and you should follow that but in general situation, what will happen if you tow an electric car, can damage some of components, same explained below…
Motor Damage
Electric cars have electric motors, which rotate due to magnetic field phenomena. In contrast to that, a generator or dynamo generates electricity from mechanical movement. So, electric motors are used in cars to move the vehicle or convert electrical energy from batteries to mechanical energy, which makes sense. If we tow a car on the ground that means, the car wheels rotate thus the motor rotates and acts like a dynamo. It generates electric energy and sends energy back to the battery. It happens because most electric cars come with a regenerative braking system, which captures energy during braking and feeds it back into the battery. Towing the electric cars on the ground will damage the motor or other electrical components.
Also, most cars come with single or dual-gear transmission which means no clutch system as you have in a normal petrol or diesel car. It is the major concern while towing.
Power Electronics Malfunction
With power electronics, an EV can’t work. It is the centre of the car which controls every sensor, electric power requirement and energy distribution from the battery. This is the most sensitive part, by towing on ground, your car can malfunction or software error can happen.
Recommendation
Many electric car manufacturers advise against towing the vehicle on ground. Some recommended using a flatbed truck instead, as it prevents any damage to any other components. Teslas come with specific towing instructions, such as putting the vehicle in a “neutral” mode or using a flatbed to ensure safe transportation.
Emergency Towing Situation
Always follow the car manufacturer instruction manual and use a truck to tow a car not on ground. Because if it damages other components then it costs you high.
