There is large spread hype on electrical vehicles (EVs). This hype is largely driven around the fact they are pollution free drives. Such pollution free aspect has given large inspiration for vehicular research and design modifications. These efforts have also been supported by various agencies and government initiatives. But there is always a question in mind that do we really need electrical vehicle?
We do accept there are many modifications and research progress is happening worldwide, which would be beneficial to avoid vehicular pollution. But the electricity generation is a still large polluting area. So on one side we are trying to reduce pollution while other side electricity generation is a question. Second there are large scale losses during charging - discharging cycles and power transformations. All this is resulting in very low efficiency. Moreover there other issues of battery stability, burning issues and low distance applicability. Still considering these issues one of the major benefits it is going to provide is environmental benefits. So if we could resolve the peripheral issues through detailed research, the EVs are going to stay here as future of world and they can be next big things. So I feel we should look forward for EV innovations and they are really going to future of transportation.

As you talking, people really need an EV and other side it all about ecosystem building. Images below Tesla Plan for electric vehicles. I think if there is ecosystem then people do buy EVs.
Example: In mobile market blackberry and cheap early smartphone not worked but that not mean mobile was bad. When in 2007 Apple introduced a iphone, was not only mobile phone launch it was a launch of apple app store where any developer in world can develop a app rights, ultimate goal was to provide better services inside the phone. After that android did for mass market in affordable prices.

Nicely put forth the need for ecosystem and awareness. It would play major role in all together
